move ' my documents' to a different drive

my current c drive is starting to get low on space 80gb down to 10gb free
my 'my documents' is about 30gb
i have installed a 250gb sata drive, almost all free at this point and would
like to
move 'my documents' there to free up the c drive
any reasons not to do this?
since it is used so much by me, will there be a performance problem?
if its not a problem to move it there, just drag and drop like any other
move?

If you just move it there, your programs will not know of its new location,
so that will be a pretty significant problem. Also, since most programs
expect My Documents to be under your username profile on the main drive,
this too will be a problem.

Perhaps there is a way to reset the Environment Variable(s) to reflect this
change, but someone else will have to answer that one, as I'm not sure.

create a new folder on the new drive, called "My Documents".
Right-click on the old "My Documents", choose properties, then on the Target
tab choose Move. Navigate to your new folder and follow the directions.
It's as easy as that.

thanks everybody for the replies, looks like the move process per the
310147 is
'official' so i will do that. i'm surprised there is no need to name the new
folder
'my documents', or some discussion about that
i'm guessing, since it is a special folder in ms, that they use some
kinda pointer to where it really is, no matter what the human readable name
is

And that updates all registry references? That's good to know. But why
does he have to create a My Documents folder on the new drive, if he uses
Move (under Properties) to move it, anyways? Or does it only move the
references to it?
