Move from ME to XP Word is super slow

I have had ME for four years on my Dell. Just upgraded to XP. Masses of
available memory and suddenly when opening Word (2000) it takes 5 minutes and
then likewise for each file I open. I noted a message in lower left of screen
saying "Requesting Virus scan". This appears when opening Word and each
individual file. I dumped Norton and moved to McAfee. Also tried a system
reset so I had no virus scanner - dumb I know. Tried the fix mentioned using
Word>Help>Detect & Repair. I have the disc set (WORD 200 SR-1, but it can't
find the DATA1.msi file on that, the system or the hard drive or on XP
upgrade disc.
Have I missed something ? Can anyone give me some advice ?

Did you do an upgrade installation over top of ME? Sometimes it is very
helpful to do a clean installation (can be done with an upgrade version).
This gives you a clean start with XP on its own.

This can happen after upgrading OS's and using an OEM Office version.
