Mouse Wheel Button

I have a generic optical wheel mouse (mostly because I'm tired of $40 mice
going bad). I don't use the 'autoscroll' function of the wheel button much,
so I'm wondering if there is a way to reassign it to do something else, say
minimizing and maximizing windows or 'double-click'.

Just download Microsoft mouse programme (free from MS). It does work
with generics. Select the nearest equivalent mouse type when
installing, like optical etc.

Yeah, I was using that before with my old Intellipoint before I downgraded.
I had already tried it with my new mouse and it didn't work and have been
trying it now with no success. If what you're saying is true, I guess my
computer is expecting to see my old mouse or my backup PS/2 mouse is
confusing it. I guess I'll have to play around with it.

Do not have two mice connected at the same time, just the optical one.
On startup, windows should auto detect and install a generic driver.
Once you have it installed and working you could connect an other
mouse, but why would you want to?
Cheers

USB occasionally goes bad forcing me to reboot. I use it very rarely, but
it's nice to have a PS/2 backup if I ever find my USB mouse being
disconnected.

Well, I figured out after uninstalling and reinstalling IntelliPoint without
my PS/2 mouse attached that my computer always expects to see a PS/2 mouse
when I used an adapter to plug my USB mouse into the PS/2 port. Doesn't
really surprise me since my computer is designed for network use in some
office in the corporate world. I guess I'm just going to have to play around
with it myself to get it to work the way I want it to. Thanks for your help
in getting this far.
