mouse pointer working in background

My pointer is stuck in working in background. Looks like it is always
search, hourglass always there

Open Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) to the Processes tab and sort the
processes in decreasing order of CPU. Park Task Manager in a corner of
your monitor. Next time the pointer turns to an hourglass for an
extended period of time, see which process(es) occupy most of the CPU's
resources. That's what your CPU is working on.
