On my WinXP box, whenever I put in a CD,
a little disk appears attached to my mouse
pointer. How can I prevent this?

Thanks,
Mike.

Have you gone into control panel--mouse and checked the options you have for
your mouse?

The disk attached to the mouse pointer is the computers way of telling you that:
1 It is busy setting up.
2 It is setting up a CD.

Does the hour-glass symbol used at other setups also bug you?

You might try changing your mouse theme, but I would just get used to the symbol as it is there for
your information.

Off topic. I did not ask what I should do, but rather
a technical question regarding how to accomplish a
particular end.

Yes, I could not find anything in the mouse menus.

Possibly your question is not about the cosmetic aspect of the pointer icon
that shows up when you put in a CD but rather that you don't want to be
notified that you put in a CD? I can't tell from your postings what you
really want to happen.

You can change XP's autorun behavior if that's what you're talking about.
Otherwise, please explain what your end goal is.

In regedit, you can navigate to:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun

Look at theDetails column to see the value. A value of 255 decimal (0xFF
hexadecimal) disables AutoPlay on all devices.

0x40 Disables AutoPlay on RAM drives
0x60 Disables AutoPlay on drives of unknown type
0xFF Disables AutoPlay on all types of drives

Change the value to 0 (zero) to enable AutoPlay on all types of drives.

Note: Always be very careful in the registry because a misstep can b0rk your
computer. Back up the registry before making changes.

I want the little disk image attached to the
mouse pointer to never appear for any reason.

Mike.

Microsoft has developed several "visual" enhancements that they had
including into XP for its initial launch.

Did this just start happening and you haven't changed anything in your
setup?

Have you replaced your CD drive with oh let's say... a new R/W drive
for burning purposes?

Installed or upgraded any new CD burning software lately?

What is you Mouse Pointer Scheme? Have you tried changeing it
temporarily to see what happens?

If something changed and then this started happening, it would help to
know more about what changed.

No, it is not new. I just decided to try to do something
about the annoyance.

My mouse pointer puts up an hourglass with some CDs which means
"Working In Background".

What is your Mouse Scheme (I am sure I already asked that).

Look at your Mouse Scheme for the Working in Background image. The
Windows Default scheme is the mouse arrow with an hourglass. What
does yours look like?

You can customize any of the mouse images (like Working In Background)
by clicking browse and choosing a different icon. I don't see one
with a little disk. but you might. I did find the old Windows 9X
animated drum thing...

Need to know your mouse scheme.
[...]

Mouse Scheme is "Windows Default (system scheme)".
There is a list of images below under "Customize:".
The disk image I am complaining about is not on
that list.

BTW, if my responses dwindle, it is because I
am about to leave on a trip. I'll be back
Monday afternoon (-0400).

What does your Working In Backgroud image show (I am sure I already
asked that).

Try changing it to something else (us the animated drum :), put in a
CD and see what happens. Does it change to the new icon?

Change it back to the original and try again.

I can change the icon. However, it does not alter the appearance
of the small disk when I put a CD in. Also note that the small
disk image does not appear on the list of icons. It must come
from somewhere else.

Yeah - I'm going with the DVD drive/software now. And... that is why
I asked if you have installed a new one as I came across some things
that were particular to a certain drive and software that came with
it. Some solutions/ideas were listed, but there is no way to know if
they apply to you or your hardware since the details are not known.

Did you answer if it was all CDs or just certain ones? How about a
blank CD. Does it go away eventually? My hourglass does eventually -
when it calms down. Is there an autorun.inf and autorun.ico on the CD
in question? What does the autorun.ico look like in your icon viewer?

So now, I would suggest asking your drive manufacturer or their
support link and see what they have to say - and let us know the
results because this has been an interesting distraction.
