Mouse makes balls up

Hi, I gave a strange problem with the mouse as in.
I can leave the mouse with the curser in the middle of the screen and after
20 or 30 seconds it will start tracking slowly in a perfectly straight line
either left/right or up/down for a distance of about 70mm. The mouse does
not move.
I am running windows xp sp2, no problems, and ordinary ps2 mouse.

If this is a Dell laptop with a touchpad and/or "stick", it is a common
problem with them. It doesn't matter if you have a mouse connected or not.

If this is not the case, then I'm afraid I can't help.

No is a desktop rebuilt from a previous set up mainly using all the original
hardware and new mother board, have been running this set up or twelve
months with no problems at all, this thing started about three weeks ago,
does not happen all the time perhaps three or four times a day.
