Mouse highlights files automatically

I am having strange behavior that I would like to change.

Using WINXP.

When in explorer and moving the mouse over the file names
(not folders). It will highlight each file (one at a time
as I move over them. If I stop on a file it will
highlight. Using CTRL then clicking the mouse will not
leave the file highlighted but holding thr CTRL or SHIFT
key down while moving the mouse over the file name will
highlight each as I roll over them (like select all).

Highlighting 1 and moving to another then pressing SHIFT
then click does not work as it should. It does nothing.

The biggest issue is when trying to save a file from say
an email or something, the explorer dialog comes up and as
the mouse rolls over the file names, the name of the file
I want to save changes (gets lost).

Very strange behavior. Any ideas?

Thanks, John
