mouse failure at startup

Almost everytime I start or restart my computer the mouse locks up. I can usually restart one time and it works but a few times I have had to completely shut down and then startup again and this so far has always worked. I am running XP Home Addition upgraded from Windows 98SE

Have you looked for and installed XP drivers for your mouse?
Is it PS/2 or USB?

It is an intellipoint 1.3 (I think) PS2 Compatiable. I
am so new to XP but I have cheked the Hardware
Compatiabilities and I have let Windows search for a
better driver. Occasionally it will lock up on me
briefly while I'm in a program but its mainly at startup.
I have ran Windows Updates but it keeps telling me I do
not need any updated drivers .
