Monitoring Internet usage

I have a supervisor asking me a question I didn't know entirely how to
answer. He has a guy who isn't doing his work but the supervisor thinks he is
surfing the net all the time. He asked me if there was a way to know what
sites the guy went to and for how long. I told him we could see where he
went, but I didn't think we could find out how much time was spent at each
site.

Am I correct in this, or is there a way to monitor how long a user is at
each site he visits on the internet? We're running a MS Active Directory
network.

Thanks

Google for: Keystoke Logger, and you'll find one that meets your needs.

Most web pages are static, meaning that once the page has been requested and
loaded, no more traffic is generated until the user loads another page. So
if the user loads a news page and spends an hour reading it, the only
traffic you will see is the initial request. If you route your web traffic
through a proxy server, you can log all of the requests.

Sounds like you are after something that tracks everything -- i.e., not just
network traffic destinations but also how long every single user program was
running.

Try googling "software usage", "software metering", etc. It can even be
approached as a client-server type deal; where all client computers have to
run through a usage server. Plenty of NAZI solutions out there.

Tell your Fuehrer (supervisor) that I said, "Seig Heil".

Hey, maybe you can even integrate it with your employer's finance/payroll
office as well -- for each minute that a user has a verboten program open,
their pay can be automatically deducted...

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

And Ermas, this isn't facism gone wild. I have 70 users and they are all
local admins on their machines. This is about a 20 year old kid looking at
porn half the day while the other guy in his dept. does all the work.
Personally, I don't care what people do on the net at work, just so long as
it doesn't interfere with work.

Thanks again,
DVS

An employer has a right to know how their equipment is being used and how
employees are spending their paid time.

I would have the users sign an agreement that clearly spells out appropriate
use of business resources, and also spells out the consequences of internet
usage ie porn during business , once signed they clearly know if they do it,
they get fired.
every business in the world should monitor internet usage for this kind of
traffic, not only does it waste time/resources it opens a business network to
infection of all kinds of malware/spyware/virus and bots.
