Monitor sleeps on standard boot

Good morning,

On booting my windows 2000 box, the output to my monitor
cuts off after the windows2k startup screen (just before
the login screen); that is, the screen goes black and the
monitor power light switches to orange. If I boot in safe
mode (with any additional options) things work fine. I
have tried this with more than one monitor, so I am
relatively certain it is not a refresh rate issue. This
has been going on for nearly a week (after 3 years smooth
operation).

I have reformatted my HD in an attempt to fix this
problem. The only things installed are the OS, my video
card driver, my audio card driver, my ethernet adapter,
norton systemworks, and ad-aware.

I am also posting this issue on the support site for my
video card; however, it seems to me if it was a video
card issue I wouldn't see the splash screen, nor would I
be able to boot fully in safe mode. Does anyone have any
possible solutions? Perhaps a mobo issue or bios issue?
I'm stumped.

Have you tried backing down on the resolution and or frequency?

Yes, I've tried the lowest settings for both resolution
and refresh rate.

I'd like to restate that this wasn't a problem for 3
years, and only recently started occuring.

Seems like either a driver issue or possibly the adapter has failed.

First of all, this problem came out of nowhere. The
adapters and drivers I had installed had been installed for
years. Why would they just randomly break?

Secondly, if it were that sort of issue, booting in safe
mode wouldn't fix it. My thought was that this is either a
service or a dll issue... something tied to full boot vs
safe boot.

Well, thing do break. Just my two cents worth. I wouldn't spend a lot of
time looking for something that probably doesn't exist. Much easier to try
another graphics adapter. If you try this then usually to remove devices
you'll want to first uninstall the device from Device Manger then power down
and physically remove it.
