Monitor black

Hi.
The display of our pc went all weird, so we removed the Video Adapter and
fitted another one that we had spare.
When the machine boots up you can see the initial CPU splash screen then the
WindowsXP start up screen, with the green gauge, then instead of the light
blue welcome screen, from then on it just goes black. We know it's loaded
because of the sounds and we can access the shared folders from other pcs on
the network. We know it's not the monitor (flat screen) as swopped a couple
of them and the same thing.
Unfortunately when I go to safe mode, it starts to load, but stops when
loading one of the drivers and just freezes there.
Any ideas?

Occasionally, when replacing hardware,
a repair install is needed

Would the problem be due to the old video card driver ?

Is the chipset brand of the new card, the same as the old card ?
(Old card Nvidia, new card Nvidia.) Perhaps if you had an Nvidia
card, you could pop an ATI card in long enough, to try to uninstall
the old Nvidia driver. Even when the cards are from the same
company GPU wise, the driver details can be quite different, and
conflict with one another. (Generally, you want to uninstall any
video card driver, before removing and replacing a video card,
but I understand why that was not possible in your case. You'll
have to do the best you can.)

Otherwise, if neither safe mode nor normal booting works, your
options would seem limited. Maybe that is why a Repair Install
(not a full install) was suggested. A Repair Install does not
affect installed applications, and does not affect user data.
Both are preserved. It does take the OS portion back to the state
it was in when first installed, so any added Service Packs,
Security Patches, and newer versions of IE (like IE7), would
also have to be added back in. It is "less evil" than installing
everything from scratch. But it still takes time.

I had a similar occurrence and found that my motherboard needed to be
replaced :(

This can happen when the "newer" video card is not exactly the same as
the older one. You need to access the PC in XP's "SAfe Mode" and in
Device Manager remove the video card and monitor "settings.' Then, at
the next reboot, XP should re-detect the newer video card and re-
install the monitor.

Unfortunately I can't get into SafeMode.
It stops loading at a certain point and then just sits there

"Certain point"?
Do you mean it stops on one of the files that scroll down the list when
attempting safe mode?
