modify design template background

I want to cut a design template background so it doesn't fill the whole page,
but is a banner at the top or side. Is there a way to modify the background
of a design template and maybe save the image as a picture?

Save the design template as an image (JPG)
Insert the picture on a slide
Use the "crop" feature on the image bar to create your banner or sidebar
After making your slides, I suggest that instead of saving as a ppt, you
might want to save it as a design template for future use. Also, to keep
continuity...Instead of creating the banner/sidebar on each slide...do the
beginning procedure on the slide master instead. That way whenever you create
a new slide, everything is formatted for you.
