This can happen if the hidden file c:\boot.ini points at the wrong
drive. Post the contents of this file in your reply. Here is how you
can look at it:
- Boot the machine with your Win2000 CD.
- Select Repair when prompted.
- Select Command Console when prompted.
- Type this command: type c:\boot.ini

Hi "Pegasus"
Thanks for your response. Here's what i found:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft
windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect.
I hope i got it wright. Just incase, here's what i did
before i got the error. My cousin was watching a DVD,
triped the power, booted the system again and the DVD
refused to come on automatically again, after satrting the
DVD application, the whole thing froze for a while and i
couldn't even get system manager. Then the dreaded blue
screen came up saying it was DUMPING something. That's the
story.
Thanks

The file c:\boot.ini looks OK.

I suggest you try this, in this order:
- Press F8 during the early boot phase, then boot into Safe Mode.
- Press F8 during the early boot phase, then boot into Last Known Good
Configuration.
- Reinstall Win2000 over the top of the existing installation, to preserve
your settings.

i've tried the first two, no luck. but for the third one
what do i need to do. Trying to re-install windows 2000
pro. it warns that if i install in the present folder i'll
loose everything on my computer (which i certainly can't
afford) and also the option of intalling on a differnt
folder by escaping. What do i do?
Thanks

You appear to be at the threshold of moving from
the group of those people who don't believe in
backing up their important files, to the one who
does . . . The iron rule of computing says: Back
up all important files to an independent medium
once every week.

Installing Win2000 over the top of an existing
installation does not normally erase any data
files. However, accidents do happen. if you don't
have any backups and if your files are important
then you should do this:
1. Install your disk temporarily as a slave disk
in some other Win2000/XP PC.
2. Back up all your files.
3. Repair your installation.

Here is an alternative:
- Buy a backup disk. They are cheap!
- Buy a caddy.
- Remove your original disk.
- Install the new disk.
- Install a temporary copy of Win2000.
- Install your old disk as a slave disk.
- Back up your files to the new disk.
- Remove the new disk.
- Make the old disk the master.
- Repair your installation.
