Missing Restore Points

karlo

Hello,

During bootup, I got the following message

=========================================================

Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
with the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

=========================================================

To attempt the repair, I used the instructions given in

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry [Q307545]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545

I followed the instructions today. When I get to step 2, I
find that there are no restore points or snapshots predating today.
The problem first occured last week, so there should have been restore
points dating last week and before. What happened to all my restore
points? Are they there, but just not viewable? I did sign on as
Administrator, albeit the new Admin created by the repair. What to
do now?

Hi Karlo.... I have had error messages appear in the past
on bootup but none quite like that, however they did ask
for my cd. I would suggest holding either F5 or F8
during bootup, I cannot remember which one... (after the
bios beeps). These should be a list of options... just
pick "Last Known Good Configuration" that should do it.
Also, you may want to try booting into safe mode (thats
another option on that screen) and doing a system restore
from there. I have no idea why you have no restore
points appearing, maybe you have system restore disabled
altogether... or the nearest restore is a month back, and
you need to change the view to the previous month. The
restore points can't just disappear b/c Windows has
strict control of the files for protection against virus
attacks and the like. I hope this helps because thats
all I can think of... If anything comes up or this
worked, just leave us a reply.

Best of luck,
Paul

Go to Recovery Console and type:
