Missing or corrupted CD drivers

The Windows system drivers for both my CD reader and burner are suddenly
"missing or corrupted", so I can't use either. Can I repair this without the
XP CD? I have a legal XP Pro, but the CD (licensed to a company) is not
immediately available and I need the reader urgently.....

It is highly unlikely you need special drivers and you shouldn't need the XP
setup disc as there are generic drivers. Right click on My Computer and
select Properties->Hardware Tab->Device Manager Button. Click the + to
expand the DVD/CD-Rom drives section. Right click your devices and select
"Uninstall". Reboot the computer. When Windows loads back to the Desktop you
should see a popup window in the lower right corner of the systray informing
you that Windows have found new hardware- it should identify the brand of
device it found and it should tell you that it is ready to use.

I followed your directions for both the CD reader and the burner. Windows
found the new hardware, but it put me right back to where I started:
1. Neither appears in My Computer.
2. Both appear in the Device Manager with the same generic drivers they had
before and the same message for the device status: "Windows cannot load the
device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing.
(Code 39)".

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you to resolve the problem:

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an
error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording
program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

Although error code 39 is not mentioned in the title of the article, it is
briefly mentioned in the "Symptoms of the problem" section. The wording for
error code 39 is something like this:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing"

THANK YOU PATTI!!! Worked like a charm!

Any way of knowing what caused the registry to corrupt like that? It
happened after I moved around some USB devices (not the CD reader and burner,
which are internal) and put on a new exterrnal hub. I took it out, but I will
need to put it back. Could it have caused the problem? I have only USB 1.0's,
and the hub is the kind that does not have its own power source.

You're very welcome!

The problem is *usually* due to exactly what is in the title of the
article......removing a recording program that placed the entries in the
registry. I don't know if plugging in the USB hub would cause that problem,
unless it happened when Windows re-enumerated devices when you swapped
around the devices when making room for the hub.

I don't know what software you use for burning, but it *may* not work
properly after having deleted those registry entries. If not, reinstall the
recording software.

Yes, Windows did re-enumerate devices when making room for the hub.....

I haven't burned since I got rid of 2KPro and installed XP because the
burning program I had (WinOnCD) isn't compatible with XP. I wanted something
very simple---just for saving and transferring image, vector, and doc data.
CDBurner XP Pro3 was recommended---any comments?

I have not used CDBurner XP Pro3, but from what I have read at various online
forums, it is well-received and given high ratings
