Missing or corrupt system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Installed latest service pack from Microsoft for Windows
2000 server, after reboot received the following message
during startup:

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is
missing or currupt:
<windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
