missing index.htm

I have a website, which has been working for quite a while, and which I have
made changes to on a periodic basis. The server is hosted elsewhere. I
recently tried to make changes to certain folders, which are password
protected, and was unable to do so because I cannot see the index.htm file in
the folder. I can see it if I go the the ftp site and log in. I can even
copy the link from the ftp site, and paste it to the frontpage window, and
then open it and make changes, but the index.htm file does not show up in
frontpage. Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks.

How are you opening the site in FP to start with?

You can not work directly on a remote site unless the remote site has the FP extensions installed
and you have accessed it via File Menu | Open Web / Site in FP.

It does not have FP extensions installed (I am told) so what do I do, now? I
have tried to transfer the site to a local folder, but only the folders
transfer, not the files.

Also, I have been trying to transfer (publish?) the remote files to my local
folder in order to make changes, and then re-publish to the remote server,
but have gotten a message about the homepage (default.htm) not able to do
certain dynamic things. Does this refer to the moving banner that now exists

Without the FP extensions on the remote server, you can not open it in FP and publish to your local
machine.

Feature that requires the FP extensions will not work on the remote server.

The only way to get a complete copy of the site, is to use a FTP application to download it to a
folder on your HD, then open that folder directly in FP and make your changes, then when you are
ready to re-publish the site, open the remote site in FTP application and delete all content first,
then you should be able to publish via FP's FTP mode.
