missing icons

All of my icons in my control panel and most of the ones in my start menu
have changed into what a system file looks like. It shows the right icon in
properties but if I try to change it, it just reverts back or doesn't change
at all. My OS is Windows XP Home

Teri, you could try getting TweakUI for WinXP it has a rebuild Icon
feature. Scroll half way down rt side and select first TweakUI. If that
doesnt work you could be infected
with Malware. To do a check get Spybot Search and Destroy.

The TweakUI worked great, thank you. I have used Spybot Search and Destroy
in the past and at the moment I've been trying Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
I think it's working but I may check it against Spybot. Thanks again for
your advice
