the first place to check
is the bios. if it is not
listed, then there is likely
to be an issue with the
hardware, possibly a simple
matter of configuration...

i am presuming that the issue you
have is regarding 2 physical harddrives
but one is not showing up.

the cmos/bios is the
place that see's all the
hardware for the operating
system.

to access the cmos you
need to press and hold
a key down then power
up the pc.

depending on the motherboard
the key to press could be the
del key or maybe the f10 key.

the pc manual or the website
to your motherboard can provide
the exact key to press.

once inside the cmos menu
check around for a list that
shows the hard disks.

harddisk 0 will be your main
boot harddrive. and harddisk
1 will be the secondary disk.

if only one disk appears in
the listing but you know there should
be a second harddrive, then this
is the clue you need to begin
resolving the problem.

however, if i mis interpreted
your posting and you are talking
about one harddrive that is subdivided
into seperate partitions, then the cmos
is not what you need to check about
an unseen partition.

ok, thanks, how do i do that?

ok, firstly, i think i understand what you mean, i wll check in the bios
first, shall i hold down the a key while it is loading up, (i do know what
the bios page lookslike :)) secondly, the rive that isnt showing is a second
one put in a while back, the main one is a split drive and is showing up as c
& d, if it is showing in the bios what then?

anything showing "0" as you said. in the "boot" section under other boot

Does this HDD been Formatted to NTFS formatting?, also did you make as Slave
( Jumper wise) or Auto Select?.

right-click My Computer > Manage > Computer
Management > Disk management Find the new hard drive select the hard drive
format the hard drive

i really dont know what you mean? before i re installed xp i had c,d, e,
drive (f & g were the dvd/cd) but now i only have c & d which is my split
drive, my extra 80g which was added is missing, int he bios it shows a
primary (smasung) and slave (load of numbers) can this be the missing 80g
drive?

Yes it is, Did you still have the DVD/CD connected to the Motherboard or you
uninstalled them?.
You have unsigned Drive here which is your missing HDD, try to assign a
letter through the Disk management as described in my earlier post, but put
in consideration your CD/DVD letter, so you will end up with C, D, E=> (for
your Secondary HDD) and G for your CD/DVD in order.
Did you get all the updates for the Motherboard rivers and your system
up2date from the reinstall?.
Also you didn't answer my Q did you Format this HDD?.

Right click it in Disk management and select Change Drive Letter and Path
and assign it the Drive Letter G if you have just Two Partitions on the
Primary HDD (C,D), then right click it again and select Format.

ok, firstly, i just re installed the 3 sony discs, nothing else, as far as i
am aware nothing was formatted
after the re installment i did updates through windows, that was all.
to be honest i dont realycare what letter it will be, as long as it shows on
my computer, i have found it in disc management but am not sure what to do
now... the split drive shows above and the second (80g) shows below as
unallocated.... what shpould i do?? (thank you for your patience)

ok.

so what it seems to be
is that the cmos is registering
2 physical harddrives, eg primary
and slave.

the other boot device refers
to a cd device. you should say
enable. that way if the harddrive
fails to boot one day, the cd can
be the backup bootup for your
emergency boot disks or windows
cd.

it also sounds like you are
referring to one of the harddrives
as split, eg 2 partitions. this is
probably the primary/master harddrive

altogether it seems that you should
have 3 partitions because the
slave drive requires at least one partition.
----------------
there have been a number of postings
so i do not know where you are at
with this issue.

if you want, you can confirm the above
and tell me what you consider to be
the issue at this time...

Give it a (1) for only one primary partition unless you want to create more
than one.
Good night and good luck.

Hi Zoe,
Try this:
- After assigning the Primary Partition then you will be asked about the
Size (Numbers) put the whole 80GB or as I said if you want to create another
Partition assign 2/3 of it but I think you want to assign the whole drive
which is 80GB.
80GB = 1024 X 80 = 81920 MBs and click next then complete the steps by
giving it a Label.

minimum and maximum, then it followed through to formatt and eventually

seems fine, do you think i need to change anything or should this be ok now??
thank you so much for your help, thank you- thank you- thank you!!

Hi Zoe,
Right click the G:\ Partition and select Properties does it show the 80GB?.
If it did show then you are okay and ready to go and use this HDD and enjoy
it and happy computing.
HTH.
