Milo: Marking Junk E-Mail as read

I like using the Unread Mail folder option in Outlook 2003, but I always have
to go over to my Junk Mail folder and mark them all as read or they all
appear in the Unread Mail folder.

At this point, it's pretty rare for something real to be in the Junk Mail.

Isn't there a way to tell the Junk Mail function, "When you move it to the
Junk Mail folder, also mark it as read" ? I can always look at my Junk Mail
later, but I want to see my real mail first.

Thanks!

No, but it is really easy to tell a search folder to not look in the Junk
E-Mail folder. Just pull up its properties and tell it not to by making
sure that the folder isn't checked.

But it's a little odd. My default Unread Mail folder doesn't show me mail
from the Junk E-Mail folder despite the settings which makes it look like it
would. Did you create your own Unread Mail search folder? That might be
the issue, not the fact that the Junk E-Mail is unread..

F.H., thanks for writing back, but I don't follow.

When I right-click on "Unread Mail" (which must have come with O2003 because
I wouldn't know how to set something like that up), I see "Properties". When
I choose that, the box that pops up has just one tab ("General") that would
allow me to change the name of the folder and whether the counter next to the
name shows total number of files or just unread ones. There's one more
option "When posting to this folder, use:" with a drop down box, but that's
greyed out.

Where are you changing the properties to say to exclude a certain folder?

Sorry about that, 'Customize Search Folder' and the Browse button, not
Properties.

yup that worked! Great! new issue, though...

as soon as I open that folder, it highlights the first one in the list. If
that's not a note that I was ready to read in that moment (or if I'm trying
to leave it as unread so that I take action on it tomorrow) -- too bad! It
gets marked as read and disappears from the list.

I was able to partially solve this by turning off the preview pane, but
that's not so great either. I'd like to see them previewed...just not marked
as read in this folder.

Is there any way to say, just of one folder, don't mark anything as read
unread unless I actually click and open it?

Well, the Preview/Reading Pane is a folder by folder view, but since you
want to keep it on, you could always set the reading pane to never mark
items as read. Tools - Options - Advanced - Reading Pane, uncheck Mark
Items as Read when viewed in preview pane and Mark Item as Read when
Selection Changes. That setting is *not* folder specific tho.

One question, does the item disappear *immediately* from the Unread Mail
search folder? It shouldn't. It should stay there until you leave the
search folder, which would give you ample time to right click on the message
and mark it as unread (once it's been marked as read).
