midi greyed out in Control Panel

I have a echoAudio Mia sound card and a midiMia installed.
All music software fails to recognise midi in/out but does not give any
errors (like no midi found etc)
All midi options in the Control Panel are greyed out.

Should I wipe the OS and reinstall?
Get an Apple Mac?
But seriously, how do I fix this?

Thanks

Uninstall your midi drivers, re-boot, then re-install them.

If bitmap sound (WAV, MP3) does not produce errors, then the graying out
must indicate that no MIDI device is available. I have never heard of Mia,
so I don't know what it comprises. But I'd think that Windows XP itself
always includes this "Microsoft GS Wavetable Soft Synth"
(c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\gm.dls).

If bitmap sound doesn't work, fix that first. (However that may turn out to
be done.)

Does Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device_Manager |
Sound,_video_and_game_controllers show any clues (red cross, yellow
exclamation mark)?
