Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse detects as Unknown Devic

I bought a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse, and a Dell Inspiron
1150 notebook. The mouse didn't come with any software. I plugged it in and
it worked.

Over the next few months, it started having intermitent failures. If I
reseated the reciever, rebooted, etc that would fix it.

Then it quit working altoghether. No errors in Device Manager. The
reciever's LED would light. The cursor would not move.

I downloaded the latest version of Intellipoint, and that fixed it for a few
weeks. Then it quit working again. At that point, I would plug in the
reciever, the LED would NOT light up, and Windows XP would report an unknown
USB device. At that point I switched to my lower USB port, and it worked for
literally two minutes, then came back with the unknown USB device message,
and the LED went out.

I keep up to date with the latest patches and whatnot. Is it possible a
Windows Update is breaking this?

I have found forums of many people that are having this same problem.
Please help us.

I have used two of these mice on my desktop. The first one, the left-click
button "died" and Microsoft replaced it.

Make sure that;

1) laptop chipset drivers are installed/updated

2) USB port which is turning down the power (power save??)
