Microsoft System Restore Points

G

Guest

My computer is making restore points and I add the occasional manual point
before processes like disk clean up and loading and deleting programs.
The restore points appear on the calender but when I try to restore to an
earlier point I am informed that 'My computer could not be restored to an
earlier time-No changes have been made to your computer'
I obviously have a problem-what can I do to correct it.
If I have a conflict with another program how do I trace it?
I cannot reinstall Windows becaue my computer will not recognise the disk
presumably because I have down loaded Service Pack 1 and 2 therefore my CD
is an earlier version of Windows.
I am running Windows xp Home Edition
ANy help would be greatly appreciated

Hi

That error message would suggest that one or more of the System Restore
files have become corrupt. You can try turning SR off/on, although you will
lose all existing checkpoints:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties>System Restore. Enable
'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - then reboot your PC. Go back into
SR and disable 'Turn off...' and then reboot again. After the second reboot
you should have one new checkpoint and SR should work properly after that.

Hi,

The majority of the time this is caused by a corrupt restore point.
Turning System Restore off then on again will purges all existing
restore points, and creates one new one.

Try running System Restore from Safe Mode.
Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to
start your computer in Safe Mode.

Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account
that has administrator credentials.
In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run box
then press Enter.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

There are also other possibilities that can cause this to happen. The
following pages have some troubleshooting steps to take.
