Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Running MS Internet Explorer 6.0 with all updates and fixes. When clicking on IE, I'm getting a new window (new to me) which says, "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, information you were working on might be lost." Then a checkbox is provided to restart Microsoft Internet Explorer. Below that is another sentence which says, "Please tell Microsoft about the problem. We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Microsoft Internet Explorer. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous." Then I'm provided with checkbox options to either send the error report or don't send. If I attempt to send the error report, I receive another error message from Iexplore that says, "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." Details of the error message are Appname: Iexplore.exe, Appversion: 6.0.2800.1106, Modname: kernal32.dll., modvers: 4.10.0.2222, offset: 0000a138.

My apologies for the length of this message but the bottom line is the above error information is Greek to me and I still can't open IE. Downloaded all updates, uninstalled, reinstalled, checked Spybot et al. Any suggestions?

suggestion 1:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFAQ.htm#IEOpen

suggestion 2:
See if you can open Control panel from Start> Run> (type in) control.exe
Then, from Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third
party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to open.

Run CWShredder from http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html It's been
the most helpful with this problem. It may be the only cleanup program you
need this time. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded
from another machine onto a floppy disk. You could try running CWShredder
without disabling browser extensions.

Search for and remove other malware and note the security tips at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.

A. See

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

B. You may need new video drivers. Check the site for your video board
manufacturer. Meanwhile you can do the following:
1. Use the default mouse pointers.
2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (For Win 98, Start |
Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will
see little, if any, performance degradation.
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

If you have an ATI video board, try adding these lines to System.ini
