Microsoft Defender Installation Issue

P

Preder, J

I am able to download and install--about 90% of the way and then when it
attempts to run on it's own the first time it will freeze, then give me a
warning that I (as administrator) don't have permissions. Confused. How do
I finish install?

Hello Preder,

Please give more information:

What operating system do you have? (Specific - Windows XP what? Home,
Professional, Media Center, Tablet PC, etc... Service Pack 1, 1a, 2 or 3?)

What did you do/notice right before you had the problem?

Did you install anything in particular? Did you answer any unusual questions?

Someone else use your computer?

What AntiVirus application do you use?

What AntiSpyware applications have you used?

Run a scan with MWMSRT

I'd recommend re-downloading Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal
Tool (KB890830), and saving to a known location--like the desktop.

After the download is complete, Temporarily disable real-time protection
by your antivirus and/or anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy,
Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g.,
ZA) before attempting to scan . (Stop all programs that are open in the
bottom taskbar) etc.

Try to run the program now from the desktop

Also, run a Full System Scan online

Windows Live OneCare safety scanner

Now the same as above with Windows Defender installation:

Remember, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator

To view a list of all installation requirements, visit the
Microsoft website <http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=63848>

I'd recommend re-downloading, and saving to a known location--like the
desktop.

After the download is complete, disable real-time protection by your
anti virus for long enough to do the installation. This may be worth trying
in
your case.

Good luck

Preder, FYI

When downloding a new appllication, or applet, or executable file, or msi
program, I always choose to SAVE them to the DESKTOP, then I make a folder
and copy the download to the new folder When the program is fully
downloaded, I then run my antivirus program against that saved file to make
sure it is virus free. (right click, then choose scan with "antivirus
program").

Once I know it is clean and safely stored, I disconnect from the internet,
turn off my antivirus program, & close all nonessential process in the task
manager.

Then go to the "New Folder" folder and double click on the new application
to install it without interference.
Once it is installed, reboot your computer to start your antivirus program
and previously ended processes automatically, and then if it needs to access
the INet for activation or registration, it can do that safely.

Your firewall may say it found a new application and asks if it is OK, which
you know is fine since you just installed it.

I have never had a problem with failed installations or other program
interference using this simple stepwise process.

What other anti-malware is running? If you disable or better yet,
temporarily uninstall that, does that help?
