Defender on Vista

I have Vista Ultimate SP 2.

I also had Windows Live OneCare. I'm trying to uninstall this as I am
planning to use Windows Security Essentials.

What happened is now that I've uninstalled WLOC, I see Defender in my
taskbar. I don't have an entry for Defender in my list of installed programs,
and I have no record of having downloaded Defender since I have installed
Vista (I did run Defender at some time before WLOC, but that was while I
still had XP (on a different PC).

Any ideas of how I can uninstall Defender? Should I uninstall Defender?

Thanks!

Hello Mike:

Windows Defender is an integral part of Vista whereas it was an
optional installable/uninstallable feature with XP.

As you implement Microsoft Security Essentials the installation
process will disable Windows defender for you - automagically.

Thanks for the confirmation. I've found a place to D/L Defender and tried to
install it. That then gave me the message about it being a part of Vista and
I found it in (I think, the security center).

Since MS Essentials is now installed, I suppose it has gone to sleep again.
:)

Thanks

Windows Defender is part of the Vista OS, and can't be uninstalled. It
isn't even listed as one of the Windows components which are optional and
can be removed or added back in.

1) Microsoft Security Essentials SHOULD properly handle this--just install
it. It should take care of Windows Defender.
2) If it does not--and I've seen on XP installs that it may not, open the
Windows Defender UI, go to Tools, Options, scroll down to the end of the
list--use the scroll bar--and uncheck the box to "Use Windows Defender" or
similar.

That'll take care of it. You can do that step 2 before installing Microsoft
Security Essentials if you want.
