Andre Da Costa formulated on tisdag :
I just downloaded the 615 update for my brothers computer and as I always
predicted, MSAS now requires Windows Genuine Advantage.

Well, what a mess .............."microsoft.public.windowsupdate"
Maybe MS can solve this until vacation periods is over.

I also helped my brother and "Service was unavailable" during a couple
of hours.......

I must really look at Linux now !

Bill Sanderson was thinking very hard :
What do you suggest needs to be done about the torrents?

Well, this is a result of this and torrents will be there
whatever MS wants it or not. Probably also special prepared
with malware.

And this has just started, we will see a lot of "special security
patches" also in the wild.

I directly found 3 MSAS versions with Bitlord.

We will see after a while when the amount of Zombies and Botnets
can be seen.

So--Microsoft has made it clear that the software has a price--the price
that you paid for the original Windows version you are running.

And now, since there is a price, there are folks running around pirating it.

I don't really see what's new here?

(And I realize that I am stating this in a very one-sided way and that the
folks providing builds via the torrents are public-service minded folks, and
the ones getting the software that way just don't know any better, or are
convinced that they can get stuff faster, or.....)

Nothing can or will be done about the torrents. Actually Bill, Microsoft's
"genuine advantage" requirement was defeated within the first 24 hours.

B

Bill Sanderson

That was the general thought behind my question.

I don't think that defeat was unexpected, but I agree with those who feel
that this is just an additional bit of data that makes Microsoft look
foolish and incompetent.

Of course it has a price but ..... users will use without activation
and without patches. And without patches we will have a huge number of
Zombies and a lot of Botnets to use for the bad guys.

Maybe in future with DRM protection built in processors ie Intel this
can be working. But I probably choose Linux if this goes on.

We will soon see what happens and as Linuxgirl pointed out WGA has
already been cracked.

You can also read this long thread from broadbands reports about this.

WGA is not required for critical secrity updates.

B

Bill Sanderson

Some of the reporting on the WGA issues has tended to not highlight the fact
that security patches don't require WGA from the download site, and are also
available via AutoUpdate.

Well, I am also running a legit copy.

But I don´t like "Big brother ", DRM and everything that
todays media industri stays for ! Ridicoulous !

It also seems, I am not sure that it is possible to
run Windowsupdate for critical updates as Robin and Bill stated
so this is good.

Andre Da Costa [Extended64] used his keyboard to write :
I don't have any problems with Genuine Advantage, I'm already running a legit
XP.
