microsoft anti spyware updating

O

Osage

I note a large number of people posting problems with
microsoft anti-spyware beta updating with new definitions.

Don't know if this will help but this is how I solved my
updating problem. By way of background, my wife and I run a
small home network consisting of two xp home computer, a
nic on each computer, and connected by nothing more than a
crossover cable. Allows my wife nad I to share our single
internet connection. Both computers have a copy of
microsoft antispyware beta as a small addition to our total
antimalware arsenal. For security reasons my wife and I do
most of our web surfing and 100% of our e-mail using
different flavors of the mozilla web browser.

One evening I noticed microsoft antispyware beta
autoupdated on the client computer but not on the host
computer on the network. The next morning I connected to
the internet on the host computer. I was at the desktop
with neither internet explorer ver 6 or the mozilla 1.7.6
web browsers open. I opened up microsoft antispyware beta,
went file and then update in an attempt to manually update.
I quickly got a red x and a error message that I was not
connected to the internet.------precisely the kind of
reality denying error message that takes a computer paired
with ineptly written software. But just to be double sure I
manually updated a non-microsoft anti malware app which
proved I was connected to the internet.

I first suspected my firewall, ruled that out, and then
tried a few other things with similar update failure.
Finally, I opened up internet explorer under the theory
that I would get better troubleshooting advice for a
microsoft product using internet explorer rather than
mozilla. As internet explorer opened up, it informed me it
was in the offline state and click here to put internet
explorer online. After ie went online, I closed the the ie
browser which again put me back at the desktop.I then
opened up microsoft antispyware beta, went to file and
update. This time, microsoft antispyware beta detected the
internet connection and updated with no problem.

Hence, I conclude microsoft antispyware beta has a rather
stupid test for an internet connection. At this point, I
don't know if the Operating system updates, the so called
critical updates are similarly hooked to internet explorer
being not closed in an offline position. So I ask any real
expert, could I miss critical microsft updates to the OS if
internet explorer is closed in the offline state even
though autoupdating is checked?????????

I do point out I did not know internet explorer was closed
in the offline condition but given my infrequent use of ie,
that condition had likely been that way for many days.

Not an expert but I do know a little about Automatic Updates and can
tell you that AU is NOT dependent on IE being on or offline.
AU is dependent on WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs as it's a
Service, not a process.

Now, if you clicked the WU link on the Start menu or from Tools from
within IE ... then IE would have to be online to connect to WU.
Simple, eh ? ;)

Thanks, Osage. We are aware that setting either IE or Outlook Express to
"work offline" is a known cause of the message that the updater cannot
connect to the Internet, and we try to mention that one when this comes up.
(and yes, this is something they need to improve in the product!)
