Microphone setup for winxp sp2 home editiion

My computers (one desktop and one notebook) both have installed windows xp
sp2 home edition, recently I plug-in microphone find windows can not detect
the microphones and failed to process the voice setup in control panel.

can anyone teach me how to setup microphone for windows xp sp2 home edition
?

PS.
I have tried another computer which has xp sp2 pro. installed, everything
is fine and window auto detect the microphone.

I hope this helps.I was having the same isue with my mic not working. and
looking in help on my computer was no help bc it told me to go on "speech" in
control panel and click on speech recognition but theres no such thing on
windows xp!. so I went to "sounds and audio devices" and clicked on voice at
the top. checked if they were muted, and if the volume was too low than went
to "test hardware" and followed the intructions. after that i was all up and
runing and it was working again.
