Messenger using Windows 2000

I am using Windows 2000 and trying to use Windows messenger. It has always
worked, until today that is. Today messenger told me that to continue I have
to install a new version of messenger. Unfortunately the latest version of
messenger for windows 2000 is version 7.0, which is the version I have
installed. I have tried installing the "latest" version over the top of my
current version, but obviously it leaves me in this loop wanting me to update
software to the latest version - of which there is no latest version for my
OS. Is there any solution to this problem, or do I have finally a reason to
ask my boss for a new computer with XP or even yet Vista!?

Thanks.

Done some digging. Due to the fact that messenger is blocked here at work to
do its own updates, its not possible to download the correct update manually
from the website. My version is still 7.0.0816 whereas the correct update is
7.0.0820 which I am unable to download.

Any thoughts to update the messenger website anytime soon?

There goes the plan to update to Vista....

Thanks again.

Greetings,

The exact download you want is here:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cf49c56c-8b3e-4eae-9904-9505f47bed45

If you can't install it directly at work, install it on another PC and simply copy the
\Program Files\MSN Messenger folder over to your work computer.

I seem to have version 7.0.0820 installed but still cannot connect.
Here is some more information that might be useful:

When I try to sign in, it tries to sign in and then goes back to the screen
that has the "sign in" button again.

When I click on Options and go to Connections, I test my connection using
"test HTTP connection" and "test HTML HTTP Connection" buttons and they seem
to show a "success" message in relation to trying to connect to the Messenger
Service.
Any help will be useful
