messaging interface problem

Let's see if I can get the history on my problem straight. This is Outlook
2000 on Vista. I had installed Outlook, it appeared to be working pretty
good, except I would get "can't find wab.dll". So I clicked on repair. It
appeared to erase my email settings, so I had to go in and set it back up.
Once again, it appeared to be working pretty good, except for the fact that
every time I opened it up, it would run the setup wizard. I honestly forget
what I did next (repair again maybe?) but now it doesn't even work. I instead
get:

"Outlook could not open the file containing the folders used to send and
receive e-mail messages, create appointments, and open the address book.
Please select from the options listed below." I have the option to creat a
new, or open an existing personal folders file. No matter which option I
choose, I get "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the
problem persists, restart Outlook."

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, nothing seems to work. I did see on
the microsoft website where I am supposed to delete some mapi*.dll and .exe
files, but some of them won't delete because it says I don't have permission
to modify them. At this point I'm stuck and I'm ready to throw my computer
through the window.

I don't believe Vista supports Outlook. I think it's meant to work with
Outlook 2003 or 2007.
