Messages disappear in Windows Mail

I recently got a new laptop which has Vista Ultimate. I'm using Windows Mail
on laptop. After I read messages in my inbox, if I close Windows Mail and
then go back later, the messages are gone. Not deleted, just totally gone?
Also, I have Outlook Express 6 on my desktop, using the same email address
but I don't get all of my emails on either computer. Some on the desktop,
some on the laptop. I have clicked on the settng "leave messages on the
server". Any suggestions?

What happens on the Vista computer when you click on the Inbox, then
View, then Current View, then Show All Messages?

Wow! That fixed it - I didn't know about that. Any suggestions on the other
issue, why I'm not getting all the messages from my Outlook Express?

Menu (Alt key if not visible) > View > Current View > check Show All Messages.

You need to set *both* machines to leave messages on the server, also set
*one* of them to delete after a reasonable number of days.

Both in OE and in WinMail go to Tools | Accounts and select the account.
Click Properties and on the Advanced tab tell it to leave a copy on the
server and check the boxes below that. Change '5' if you want, but don't
make it too long.

I am familiar with how to access pop accounts from any microsoft program like
express or windows mail. I have had no problem in the past with express.
With Vista and Windows Mail I have the option checked in Advanced features to
leave a copy of the message on the server. However, everytime I access
Windows Mail it downloads the message and does not leave it on the server. I
have a Gateway and they are supposed to support the operating system but they
dont have an answer other than to re-install windows which I do not want to
do. Has anyone seen this issue as well?

Have you checked to see if you selected a delete option under
Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties, Advanced?

I have yes and nothing was selected. Gateway insists its a problem with my
provider - optonline - with respect to the account not being configure
properly for window mail when windows mail goes to retrieve the messages. I
think that sounnd dubious as it works fine with outlook express on my other
laptop. I guess i will take it up with my provider.

Some mail providers don't allow emails to remain on the server once they
have been downloaded. I don't know if Optonline has that policy.

Hi,

I have reached the conclusion the problem is with Vista Windows Mail. I
tried to access my same Yahoo account with Windows Live Mail and there is no
problem there, the messages are not deleted from the yahoo server.
I suggest you use WLM. It is anyway a better application. I use it to access
my Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail accounts and newsgroups.
