"Message read" not working

D

Dumb Bunny

Under TOOLS/OPTIONS/READ tab, there is a check box saying "Mark messages
read after displaying for - minutes".
This does not seem to have any effect at all, whether or not the time to
display is altered.

Anyone got a comment to make on how to get this working?

That's after seconds, not minutes and it does not apply to all messages. It
only applies to a message once you select it and read it.

I stand corrected re. "seconds" and not "Minutes" Steve, but on my computer
ALL messages are marked as "Read", whether the option is checked or not.
That is what I would like clarified if possible.

Are you saying that a newly downloaded message is shown
in the message list pane with a non-bold font, even though
you have not selected it yet?

I will try and make it clearer Gary.
I use Outlook Express and when messages arrive at the Inbox they appear in
a bold font with the preceding envelope symbol shown closed up.
After I have read the message it is then shown in a non-bolded font, with
the flap on the envelope symbol raised.

The appearance of a raised envelope flap, indicating that the message has
been read, is apparently controlled by the check box found under
TOOLS/OPTIONS/Read tab, but on my computer a "read" message will always
appear with a raised envelope flap and a non-bold font, no matter whether
this option box is checked or not.

Are you able to offer any help to correct this annoyance?

First of all, this newsgroup is dedicated to the Windows Live Mail
program, not Outlook Express. It's been many years since I used
OE, so I won't comment on it. In Windows Live Mail I never pay
any attention to whether the envelope flap is raised or lowered.
AFAIK, the unread/read status is only indicated by bold/non-bold.

Sorry, I meant Windows Mail where I wrote Windows Live Mail.

I have the same problem. I have set it for 25 seconds yet as soon as messages come in the envelope is shown as open and read. When I was on windows xp there was no problem now I have Vista as computer broke. so annoying as you cannot see what is not read, have to remember each time.

The unread/read status of a message is indicated by the bold/un-bold
font in the message list pane.

There could be two issue contributing. One is the actual font that is
displaying the message header. That is dictated by the Windows Icon font (a
global setting) and if that font does not have a boldface, then they will
always be "unbolded". If you right click on the header and choose Mark as
Unread then does it get bolded then? If so, then the icon font is not the
problem.

The other issue could be due to a message rule that automatically marks the
messages as read. Check the rules (Tools | Message Rules) and see if maybe
there is something there contributing.

Hallo Gary
I tried your right click to mark something as unread and the yellow envelope
came up, so that is OK. BUT although my setting is show as read after 25
seconds as soon as messages are downloaded the show as read. I tried 60
seconds too. what else can you suggest. I hate this Vista, Windows XP was so
much better, so many things I cannot do on Vista.

Hi Dumb BUnny. Agree this problem is so annoying. I tried setting from 10 seconds to 60 seconds, no difference.

I've never heard of this happening to anyone else
(newly downloaded messages have a 'read' status).
It could be due to some interference from a third party security program.
You might try out Windows Live Mail, to see if that cures the problem:
