memory stick not working

I am using windows XP with a sony vaio which has a memory stick slot, when I insert the memory stick nothing happens, a light used to come on and now that is not happening either...I now there are pics on it as when I insert it directly in to my HP printer it transfers the pics to my comp. The only problem with this is that it only is not compatible with the sony memory stick PRO 256mb....How do I get my comp to accept my memory stick!!!
