Memory error opening registry

Please help every time I open the registry on my friends PC I get the
following message "Memory access violation in module kernel32 at <memory
location>".

I am trying to download all the latest Microsoft patches for her XP home
edition. They download and install (so they say)fine but when I reboot and I
check the windows update they need downloading again. When I went to check
the registry it wouldn't open. I am assuming the registry not opening is the
cause of the update issue.

All help much appreciated

have you run spybot? - virus check also. Clear your temp internet folder,
and any temp windows update files,

Ok Cleared out all the temp files, ran spybot which found loads of issues and
resolved them. Rebooted the PC and now it will not run any .EXE file. Says
they are not associated with any program. How can that be?
