McAfee "Dat" files dated 11/8/04

Brendan DJ Murphy

Following on from a recent post of mine, and the replies that I received, I
have since decided to ditch AVG.

As I said, the company I work for no longer issues us with Sophos Update
Disks.
However, I discovered that the new corporate AV is McAfee!

I have installed the product but the "AutoUpdate" is configured to attach to
a server on the corporate Lan.
Not a problem, as I can use my VPN connection.

However, the DAT files are dated 11/8/04 !
Even on the Mcafee public internet site, the DAT files are 11/8/04!

I still subscribe to the Sophos Email Notification and their are new IDE
files for today!
W32/Rbot-FV
W32/Sdbob-MH
W32/Saros-A
to name but a few.

Does this mean that McAfee are 2 days behind ???!!!!

Brendan.

Thanks Guy.
I found that thread in Google..... Interesting reading!

Just to summarise...
Am I right in saying that DAT files are updated every Wednesday, but if a
medium/high virus threat is circulating then they issue an emergency update?

Will I be notified of this emergency DAT update via "Avert"

I have found how to add a new entry in my list of repositories so that I can
run "AutoUpdate" without being "VPN'ed" in to the company network!

What frequency is suggested to run the auto-update? I have set mine to
every 3 hours!

You have to sign up with the McAfee/AVERT listserver to receive notifications.

I suggest setting auto-update to once per day in the PM. I don't remember any events where
two DATs were posted in one day.

Dave

Follow David's advise regarding the auto-updater.

As you see from that thread I run only DOS AV programs.

When the AVERT listserver sends my mail server a message, I have a job
that Wgets the update.ini from the FTP site and then parses that INI
for the DAT zip to download.

Just FYI:

McAfee is not my primary AV scanner.
The precedence is as follow:
1. Sophos
2. AVP/KAV
3. F-Prot
2. McAfee

Sophos, F-Prot and McAfee are updated basically as describe above.
AVP/KAV is updated via a period Cron job.

I am nuts(well that is not the professional term) but stupid, obviously
not. Now on the other hand, Outlook Express? Perhaps you should look
into a mirror. Why 4 scanners; because I have licenses, I like to
compare how each performs, etc.

Just what level of user do you think that I may be when I say that...

o I run only DOS AV programs

o When the AVERT listserver sends my mail server a message, I have
a job that Wgets the update.ini from the FTP site and then
parses that INI for the DAT zip to download.
