I recently bought Maxtor 3100 portable HD, with USB connectivity and i
supposed to be compatible with both USB 1.1 and 2.0 . It should no
need any driver when connected to XP computer. I have 2 computers on
notebook and one desktop, both running XP pro. I have no problem usin
my HD on the notebook which easily recognized my HD when I plug it int
one of the 1.1 USB ports. When I plug the HD to the USB port of th
desktop (2.0), I get the message " One of the USB devices attached t
this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it"
When I take a look at the USB ports in the device manager, an "unknow
device" is listed. Other hardware runs fine when connected to thes
same USB ports. What can I do

I purchased a 160 gig Maxtor for use with my Win98 systems in Dec 03
and since then have been using it with an XP system. In both cases no
problems. Did you install the driver from the CD that came with the
system? It's not necessary to install all of the Retrospect SW but
perhaps the driver is.

I've just bought the same Hard Drive, works on my Laptop, not on my desktop.

It shows in device manage as being active, it passes when I do a test with utility provided from their website.

Doesn't show in explorer!

Did you manage to sort this out?
