maximum resolution limited by client?

Joe Ross

I have an old P200 with a Matrox Millenium card that I am using to remote
desktop into a variety of machines. The P200 is running Win2000 and the
remote desktop connection client add-on.

All of the machine I connect to are set in 1280x1024 (variety of OS - WinXP
Pro, Win2K Server, Win2003 Server). Everything was working flawlessly for
months until a few days ago when I rebooted the P200 for maintenance. I
don't know what the resolution was set to on the P200 before the reboot, but
now the maximum resolution is 1024x768. When I RD into any of the machines,
they go full screen but are running at 1024x768. Besides the inconvenience
of having all of my desktop icons rearranged every time I RD into one of the
machines at this lower resolution, the lower resolution is also hurting
productivity.

I'm writing this message to confirm that the maximum resolution of a remote
desktop session is limited by the resolution of the client RD machine. If
this is the case (which makes sense), I know the local P200 video settings
get screwed up and I need to spend my time on figuring out why the Matrox no
longer wants to go higher than 1024x768.

If someone can confirm that this is the case and there was no way I was
running in 1024x768 and connecting at higher resolutions successfully
before, I would appreciate it.

Thanks
-joe

Hi Joe,

Yes, resolution when remoting in is limited by the client's abilities. I
have a server with a 2MB video card that can only display at 640x480 that is
running Terminal Services. I remote desktop into it on a laptop running at
1600x1200 and I get a full screen.

If something's not working locally and is limiting your desktop resolution,
RD sessions would be affected.

Up to the limitations of Remote Desktop, which is 1600x1200 IIRC...
