maximum no. of network connection reached

Steven

We have a network of computers all running Win2k. We don't have a server but
one of the computers acts as a file server by having file sharing switched
on. The size of the network has slowly been increasing so that there are now
10 computers trying to access the file server. Occasionally when a computer
tries to connect to the shared volume we get a message saying that it can't
connect because the maximum number of network connections has been reached.
Does Win2k place a limit to the number of users that can access a shared
volume, and, if so, what is it and can we increase it, or is it time to
install a proper server for our network?

TIA.

Hi Steven,

The maxinum # of connections allowed on Professional is 10 concurrent
connections. If you require more, you may want to look into one of our
server products.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/features/compareeditions.mspx
compares the different flavors of Windows 2003 Server.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Win2K max 10 concurrent sessions
WinXPPro max 10 concurrent sessions
Win2KHome max 5 concurrent sessions

These are hard limits that can not be changed. You need a server version of
windows to achieve more concurrent sessions.
