Maximum File Size For Download

J

Jim Reed

I am running XP Home, V5.1, SP2.

I occasionally download backup data files from a web site that tend to get
as large as 20 or 30 MB. Recently, I have lost the ability to download
files this large. The download will begin and after part of the file has
been downloaded, it will get stuck. After being stuck for about 45 seconds,
a dialog box pops up that says I am unable to download that file because the
connection to the server was reset.

When I first observed this, it would get stuck at the 4 MB level. When I
tried doing this yesterday, I was able to get to the 8 MB level. I have not
knowingly adjusted any settings to cause this, but they may have been
changed while doing routine updates.

The technicians that run the web site say there is no problem with the web
site, and my internet provider says there is no problem on their end and
that the problem is probably due to a setting on my computer.

I saw article number 900900 in the knowledge base that referred to a 50 MB
limit for downloading, but the files I am trying to download are much
smaller than that. I tried to follow the directions in that article and set
the limit at 50 MB, but it did not improve my download performance.

Does anybody have any recommendations on what I need to do? Thank you very
much in advance for your help!

Try turning off any screen saver that you may have activated as well as
power saving. My screen saver caused all kinds of problems with long
downloads when I was on a dial up account so I turned it off and never
turned it back on.

Thank you very much for your reply. I do not currently have an active
screen saver, and the "connection reset" dialog box occurs way before
anything is turned off by a power saving setting.

I was able to download these data files without difficulty in early May, so
this problem is a recent occurrence. A system setting change due to a
Windows update is the only thing that seems to make sense to me. What other
possibilities might there be?

Contact your ISP. It is likely a connection problem rather than an
operating system problem. Driver packages for nVidia graphics cards are
larger than 30 MBytes, for example, and are regularly downloaded by many

Phil,

Thank you for your reply. When I first noticed this problem contacting my
ISP was my first step. They told me that since I was able to download part
of the file before it hung up that it was not a connection issue, and more
likely to be related to my computer settings. Do you know of a specific ISP
setting that I can point them to?

You need to increase the Maxim Transmission Unit (MTU) on your PC to be able
to finish the updates:
Open a run command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK] and locate this Key:
[-]HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\Interfaces=
DWORD (1472)
HOW TO: Change the Default Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Size Settings for
PPP Connections or for VPN Connections
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826159
Also see this pecs here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314496/EN-US/
Recommended TCP/IP settings for WAN links with a MTU size of less than 576
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900926
Also if you have a Web accelerator can corrupt the Download or disrupt it.
Check your firewall not setting the file Limit to your system.
Also try this tool for the winsock fixer:
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html
Download and runn then it will ask you to reboot, do so and see if you can
download more than 30MBs.

The reply from your ISP is not very complete, nor necessarily correct.
First level customer support responses can be useless at best, and
misleading and time wasting at worst. I can't suggest an ISP setting to
look at because you have given no details of how you connnect, your ISP,
what type of connection, what software is used, what you mean by "I
occasionally download backup data files from a web site", whether you have
any other connnectivity problems, whether you have an problem with large
downloads from other web sites ... My guess is that an OS problem is at the
very bottom of the list of potential causes of the problem you present.

MTU has nothing to do with transmission file size, only the packet size.
Picking an optimal MTU size can increase thruput, but doesn't affect file
size.

What type of connection do you have? Broadband / dial up capacity? Is
the time you download a factor i.e. busy or off peak? Is the connection
wireless, ethernet or USB?

I experienced something similar recently - a particular file would
seem to download, but the size of the resulting download was always
much less than the original 50MB and therefore wouldn't execute. I
tracked the problem to the size of my internet cache which I had
limited to 20MB. The particular download would first download into the
internet cache before showing in my default download folder. I
resolved the problem by increasing the size of the Temporary Internet
Files folder in Internet Options => General tab. Don't know if this
would be your situation.

_____

Internet cache size is NOT a limit on file download size; it is a limit on
the amount of retained webpage content, saved content that, if a webpage has
not changed since the last visit, eliminates the need to reload the page
content through the Internet connection. When you download a file, you are
asked to specify the directory in which you wish to save the file. And
there it is saved, NOT in the Internet cache.

If this is a DSL or dial-up account, very small problems with the telephone
line can cause data loss in the transmission of the file. If your ISP is any
good, they should test your connection by sending to you a very large file
and then have that file returned to them. My ISP did this for me and
discovered that the download and upload speeds were not within acceptable
range and they requested the telephone company to check out the lines.

Also, have you tried downloading without using the download manager that is
mentioned in another post?

Thank you very much to all that have replied to this thread.

I have a Verizon DSL connection running through a Belkin router. My desktop
is hardwired to the router via ethernet cable and I connect wirelessly to a
laptop. I have been unable to download my larger backup files to either
computer. Both run Win XP Home Edition.

I called Verizon's tech support this morning about a different connectivity
issue. I lost the ability to connect to the internet using Internet
Explorer, although Outlook Express worked fine for both email and the Usenet
newsgroups. They did two line tests. The first indicated there was a small
problem with the DSL line. After rebooting the computer, router and modem,
the second line test indicated the connection was clear. I tried to
download my data file again, and was able to get about 10 MB downloaded
before getting the dialog box saying the internet connection has been reset.
This occurred on both desktop and laptop. This was an improvement because
previously the connection was gettging reset after downloading about 4 MB.

The time of day does not appear to have any effect on this problem. I have
tried before 8 am, after 10 pm and in the afternoon.

I told the Verizon people that there are no problems with the web sites I am
downloading from because I can download the files from other computers
outside my home. I don’t usually download large files from any other
location, other than perhaps the Microsoft Windows and Office Update sites.
This problem has only appeared sometime in the past 2 months. Prior to May
this problem did not exist.

Verizon is not interested in doing anything further because they think it a
computer issue and not an internet connection issue, even though the
internet connection is getting reset for some reason.

Hi Jim,
Does your Connection is secure (you implemented a SSID and an Encryption
Key)?.
There is a setting on thwe router to limit the download, if this set then to
what (value)?.
Did you scan your computer for malware and viruses, what protection software
you have, some updates for Anti-Virus, Anti-malware recently caused similar
issues.
Third party toolbars installed, graphic accelrator installed ( go to the
add/remove programs and check what there).
Run Disk cleanu up then run this command:
sfc /scannow click [OK]

To Phil:
Claymore correct if the Temp is corrupted it can effect the download
(corrupt the download or inturrpt the download procedure).

Nass,

Thank you for your reply.

My home network is secure, but has not changed in over a year, and this
problem is new to the past couple of months. The router does not have any
settings to limit a download size.

I'm using Avast antivirus and Spybot. Both report a clean system, although I
know there could be something lurking that has not been detected. Both are
up to date.

I have a new NVidea graphics card to go with the new monitor I bought
recently. I'm not sure what settings it has that would affect this problem.
What should I look for?

I have had the Google toolbar installed for a couple of years, so this has
not changed. I ran the disk cleanup and the scannow command.

I can now download about 11 MB before the internet connection gets reset.
This is much better than 4 MB, but I still have a few backup data files that
are larger.

Try shutting down all virus programs and then do a download.

I am running XP Home, V5.1, SP2.

I occasionally download backup data files from a web site that tend to
get
as large as 20 or 30 MB. Recently, I have lost the ability to

files this large. The download will begin and after part of the file
has
been downloaded, it will get stuck. After being stuck for about 45
seconds, a dialog box pops up that says I am unable to download that
file
because the connection to the server was reset.

When I first observed this, it would get stuck at the 4 MB level.
When I
tried doing this yesterday, I was able to get to the 8 MB level. I
have
not knowingly adjusted any settings to cause this, but they may have
been
changed while doing routine updates.

The technicians that run the web site say there is no problem with the
web
site, and my internet provider says there is no problem on their end
and
that the problem is probably due to a setting on my computer.

I saw article number 900900 in the knowledge base that referred to a
50 MB
limit for downloading, but the files I am trying to download are much
smaller than that. I tried to follow the directions in that article
and
set the limit at 50 MB, but it did not improve my download
performance.

Does anybody have any recommendations on what I need to do? Thank you

Both report a clean system, although
I know there could be something lurking that has not been detected. Both
are up to date.

I have a new NVidea graphics card to go with the new monitor I bought
recently. I'm not sure what settings it has that would affect this
problem. What should I look for?

I have had the Google toolbar installed for a couple of years, so this has
not changed. I ran the disk cleanup and the scannow command.

I can now download about 11 MB before the internet connection gets reset.
This is much better than 4 MB, but I still have a few backup data files
that are larger.

Yeah, right. Trade one small problem for the potential of many big
problems. Much better to apply the correct solution rather than flail about
and grab dangerous solutions, which yours definitely is.

Absolute hogwash and cowardly. If you know and trust the site where you want
to download from, there is no danger in turning off virus programs to test.
You can also do a back-up and restore before downloading if you are leery. I
use no virus programs and have no problems. Study these newsgroup posts and
you'll see at least 90% of the problems are CAUSED by virus programs not the
curative of them. Dangerous solution---only your emotions not fact.
