I guess this is going to take someone with a genius IQ to
solve this one. I have posted it in several different
forums and apparently no one has been able to figure this
one out.

I need a script or some kind of program that will tell me
if anyone is using my hard drive.

I am told that the Windows XP pro has this feature and I
know that the data is available because we tried the
Computer Manager shared folders and it proved just a
little too complex for most of the users on our network.

I do not need anything complex, just a simple program that
only someone who is really gifted could create to present
the basic status to those less gifted. While it would be
nice if it were part of the shutdown script, I can get the
others to click on a desktop icon before they shutdown and
lock others out of their drive.

Your time and attention are greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I am not aware of any tool that may accomplish what you want. Wouldn't it
be easier to just restrict the drive access via NTFS permissions. A rogue
user could attempt to access the drive but if he does not have permissions
they get denied access. You would not have to worry about shutting down the
computer. You could enable logging via the event log to log any failed
attempts and review the logs later to see who the offending party maybe.

Maybe I did not make myself very clear. We have multiple
cad stations and no server. Each of us at times has to
access the others hard drives to update drawings. There is
no indication of others using ones hard drive so we now
have to call everyone on the network and ask if we can
shutdown. Does this make our situation a little more clear?

Thanks for your reply.

netstat -an will tell you all IP connections.
Vision from FoundStone will show you that and more.
BlackICE PC Protection (IDS) will tell you and notify you and allow you to
configure who can connect and who cannot.

netstat comes with your OS, Vision is free from FoundStone and BIPCP runs
about US$40.

Hello,

Yes, that does make your scenario much more clear. There is no way that I
know of to automatically find out who and to notify those that have drive
access that you are rebooting. There may be some third party management
software that will do this for you but none that I have been exposed to.
