Master reboot

I have a customer who has XP Home and when you reboot the computer you
generally get a message that sez Master Reboot Failure.

If you do CTRL-ALT-DEL that system always boots up fine.

It does not have any problems if you do a cold boot.

I replaced the drive and cloned it and I still see the message.

I have searched the internet for solutions related to Master Reboot Failure
and Master Reboot Error and have not found any help.

Thanks

Hello Bob:

I wonder if you ran the system's chkdsk.exe utility to either of the HDDs?

I actually went back this morning and did a full format on the new drive and
installed the OS from scratch and I still get the message?

Thanks for the reply.

It is a stand-alone 1 hard drive system.

I have been in the computer business for about 28 years and I have never
seen it before either.

You did give me an idea though.

It has an external USB HD that is used as a backup drive.

I will go back over on Monday, remove it and see what happens.

Thanks

Hello Bob:

By this time, all of us are probably thinking the same thing; is the
BIOS set to boot from an external USB source (which is not a bootable
device) before the bootable internal HDD?

Was the original hard drive faulty or was it the cable? Did you replace
the cable? Have you tested the original drive with the drive
manufacturers utility? What error report appears in Event Viewer?

Hope this helps.

Problem solved.

The error was coming form the external USB drive.
This drive has been hooked to this computer for about 3 years.

Anyway, the drive was not in the boot order and USB devices were not setup
so they would boot.

I moved the data, reformatted the external hard drive, put the data back and
now the error is gone.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
