Manually adjusting picture duration

I have a unique purpose for using photostory. I am learning musical pieces by
importing their music into a story and then placing pictures of each measure
in sync with the measures of the music. When I first used the product, there
was an "import pictures" button which then presented an intermediate window
where I could drag and drop my pictures, which then could be dragged into the
photostory filmstrip. From the fimstrip, I could then drag the right handle
of each picture to stretch or shrink the picture as necessary.

After I closed and reopened the program, however, I never again saw the
intermediate window where the imported files went, they would just
immediately populate the filmstrip in name order and then I could no longer
drag the handles to adjust the duration of each picture manually.

Does anyone have an answer to this problem?

your first paragraph aligns with Movie Maker.... while your second one
describes Photo Story.... are you sure you aren't thinking of the two
different apps?

==================================
Which version of PhotoStory are you referring to?
Your description sounds more like Movie Maker.
