Malware - how to remove

S

Seymour

I somehow now have "Malware" in control of my computer. I can't access
Windows Defender, popups are constant, no matter how many times I try to run
antivirus software to remove - it doesn't. Windows explorer shuts down. This
"Malware" Defense has taken over my computer. I tried downloading Windows
Defender again directly from microsoft website - fail. Tried loading new
antivirus software - failed. IT seems my computer is a lost cause. Any
suggestions to solve this issue - help please! I searched the Microsoft site
and no help.

D/l and run <http://www.superantispyware.com/> SAS
and < http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php> MBAM

After the software is updated, it is suggested scanning the system in Safe
Mode.

SUPERAntiSpyware just put up a Online Safe Scan at
<http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html>
if you cannot install and/or run the current SUPERAntiSpyware product due to
an infection.

The very first thing you should do is to find out if there is any
malware resident.

Not sure by your post if this is XP or Vista.

Besides the specific edition of Windows installed, what Service Packs have
been applied so far ?

In the meantime, see if you can download MBAM, install, update it, and
then run a Quick scan: <http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php>
Click the ' Download free version ' button.

Once it's downloaded you may need to change it's name to *anything*
other than mbam-setup to get it installed.

Once it installs allow it to attempt to update.

If it can not, then do a
Quick scan anyway.

Allow it to remove what it detects.

*IF* it can not install and the system was able to update last month,
then try running the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool IF you've
previously allowed Windows Update to install it.

In Vista, click the Start orb, type in mrt in the Start Search field.

Then *right* click mrt.exe and choose Run as administrator.

In XP, click Start > Run > enter mrt in the Open field and then click OK
or press Enter.

When MRT opens click Next, then put a mark next to Full scan.

Click Next again. The scan will take awhile to complete but *should*
allow the installation of MBAM and/or allow you to have the system
scanned by an online scanner.

If the MRT has never been installed nor updated, then I doubt you'll be
able to download and install it as the latest 'versions' of malware are
acutely aware of the MRT.

Good luck
