Making IE 6 the default browser

R

Roger

I have two browsers on my computer. How do I make IE 6
the default browser? Netscape 7.1 is the current default
browser.

IE-Tools-Internet Options-Programs tab.
Check the box "IE should check...."
Close IE and reopen it.

Did that but whenever I click on an url in say the
favorites folder it still opens the navigator browser
there must be someplace in windows that tells the system
which browser to select when a link is clicked.

Yes, there is.
The file type associations, but they should be reset when IE checks
and makes itself the default.

Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

They are not all easy to change, as Internet Shortcut (URL) has this
as the application used:

rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

If your system is running XP, you may try this fix:

ExportZone - for Internet Explorer:

Try the .reg fix by Ramesh, but read it in NotePad first and make any
path changes necessary.

If you have Win9x, then alter the first line from:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

to:

REGEDIT4

The latter should work in Win9x and XP anyway.

Thanks Alan.

Roger:
The fix applies if IE is installed in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder.

Today just a few minutes ago IE when opened finally gave
the message "IE is not the default browser do you want to
make it the default browser? This was the message I was
expecting after following Alan's instructions. I have
used IE several times since doing Alan's recommendation
without seeing this message.

The one thing that I did in the meantime was to download
some Windows updates. Since the XP installation was just
recent there were many updates to be applied. I mention
this in case someone sees this problem in the future -
that is make sure you have all the updates applied.

Thanks for all the help.
