Making desktop icons' backgrounds transparent

On the desktop, how can I make the icons' backgrounds transparent?
Currently, the background of the icons on the desktop is the same colour as
that set in the display properties.

THanks,

Jignesh.

I can't seem to find anything in System Properties | Advanced that will
remove the colour background on the text labels associated with desktop
icons...any other ideas? I know its possible as it's setup correctly on my
other laptop that has XP on it.

Hi,

Control Panel/System/Advanced tab, click on performance settings. On the
Visual Effects tab, enable the line to "use drop shadows for icon labels on
the desktop".

Seems an easy way to do it is, right click a blank space on the desktop
select arange icons and click lock web items on desktop.
This works for me :)

Three things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) "use drop shadows..." must be checked
2) "Lock Web items..." must be CLEARED
3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't work.

To check for web content: Display Properties > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop button > Web tab > make sure all checkboxes are clear.
