Maddening mouse behavior

Tom

I have a wireless intellimouse explorer that has begun to
act very strangely. All of the five mouse buttons
including the movements of the wheel have been
desensitized. In order for me to press any GUI element
in Windows it takes 5 to 15 clicks of a button before it
actually takes action. If I use the keyboard to select
or open something, it works fine.

Here's what leads me to believe that it is software
rather than just a broken mouse: I can click and drag
things perfectly every time. It's only when I try to
click and release a button does it ignore me.
Furthermore, there is no problem in me moving the cursor -
it is smooth and sensitive as any optical mouse.

Here's what I've tried so far and gotten no results:
1) Moving the wireless receiver closer to the mouse
2) Replacing the batteries
3) Assigning different buttons different functions and
trying clicking then
4) Changing its USB port
5) Closing all running programs
6) Closing and uninstalling Norton Antivirus 2004
7) Reinstalling the mouse software
8) Reinstalling Windows XP over itself (not a clean
install)

Relevant system specs:
ASUS P4T motherboard
P4 1.4ghz
256 pc800 RDRAM
Windows XP Home
Plenty of free HD space
Linksys Wireless PCI Card
ATI Radeon 9600 pro

Considerations:
I have about 70MB to 125MB of available physical memory
during typical operation.
My system is regularly maintained and kept mostly clean
of unnecessary processes and junkware.
The wireless NIC and nearby AP/router never interfered
with the operation of the wireless mouse in the past.
The last program I remember installing before taking note
of this problem was zMUD by ZuggSoft, a relatively benign
MUD/Telnet application.

Given what you have done, if changing the transmitter channel does nothing,
suspect the transmitter has failed.
