Macromedia Central extends the reach of Flash rich Internet
applications and content beyond the browser and into the desktop,
making true cross-platform applications a reality. This offering builds
on the strength of the Macromedia Flash development community, the AOL
AIM and ICQ services for messaging and presence, and existing web
standards.

Macromedia Central is a rich client environment for delivering
cross-platform desktop applications. Flash developers use the Central
SDK and Macromedia Flash MX 2004 to create applications for the Central
Desktop Client - a runtime environment for running and managing
Central applications. Unlike conventional web sites, Central
applications function offline, keeping important information constantly
available. Central applications run in a controlled environment to keep
sensitive data secure. And because Central automatically notifies the
user when new versions are available, applications are always
up-to-date.

Both the Central SDK and the Central desktop client are available free
of charge.

So, who do you work for?
Flash is crap. No webmaster should ever use it.

Hello,
No.
Java is made for more "serious" stuff IMHO. There are various
serious apps written on it.
Flash has became a toy.

it always depends on what you want/need. Both have their pros
and cons and only flash is mostly used for trash (I remember a
lot of old java applets that are just the same trash) does not
mean, it could not used for serious, helpful applets for things
that can't be done (in acceptable expense) in html/client side
scripting. In the future maybe SVG may be useed for this, but
not yet. (Jave is very much used in webserver enviroments and
there it is great. Take a look at much of the Apache stuff.)

This really means toy, I don't need Flash on my desktop, I
strongly believe. But there's also no Java desktop app I use,
even when some look promising (f.e. "Numerical Chameleon"?),
cross-plattform always means on the other hand ignoring
operating system specifica/usability/gui.

Thorsten

With the websites that I generally visit, i've had to many issues with
webmasters using prebuilt java code and not fully tweaking java for
their site. on the other hand, same can be said about flash sites
(look how many corny games sites there are based on flash as opposed to
java); i use java because its required by some of the school and work
related sites i visit but i don't prefer it. given time, i think flash
apps can be developed that will be worth while (right now its mostly
games).....
