LPT1 is called Black Ice Port

Windows XP SP2 on a IBM Thinkpad T41p

I notice that my LPT1 is described as a "Black Ice Port" rather than a Local
Port. I dont know how long this has been there and am worried that
something is wrong.

For some reason I cant install a HP LaserJet 2100. Each time I attempt it,
the installation fails and it says it cant find the ports specified.

Thanks for the URL, I read it but still dont understand why XP now calls my
LPT1 a "Black Ice Port" as I dont use Black Ice on my machine.

The second problem is the failure to install a printer on this port. Always
get the same error, "can't find the ports specified" Any ideas if the Black
Ice Port is in any way connected to this problem.

I can't see any connection with the "black ice" product. Did you
look in device manager and see the resources and such allocated
to the patallel port? Have you checked the bios to see how the
port is set there?

In the Printer Properties is see.

LPT1 Black Ice Port

I have deleted it and let it recreate itself and it always comes back the
same way.

In Device Manager it appears as ECP Printer Port (LPT1) which is how it is
presently set in the BIOS. The Resources do not show any conflict.

You may need to plug the printer into the parallel port, turn the
printer on, then go to device manager and on lpt1, select "scan
for hardware changes". Parallel port devices need to be pulgged
in and turned on when XP boots, or they won't be seen later. to
aviod having to reboot, use the scan for new hardware approach.
If the printer drivers have been installed previously, then XP
should see the printer.

The printer is recognised OK either at boot, or at "scan for hardware
changes", and the drivers start to install then it aborts with "can't find
the ports specified"

Any idea's

The printer drivers may be old and not made for use with
NT/2K/XP. Go to the below link and get the userport.zip file. Run
userport and it will set XP up so you can have direct access to
the parallel port hardware. Then try loading the printer driver
and see if it works then.

Thanks I will try that suggestion.
Drivers for the LJ 2100 are those from XP.
