Low running cost B&W laser printer

R

Rob Nicholson

We work very closely with a charity and they've asked us to recommend a good
quality B&W laser which has low running costs which I take to mean uses
toner frugally and replacement toner doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Any recommendations as we always buy HP so don't know much about anything
else :)

Thanks, Rob.

Depending on their usage levels probably either a low end Samsung, if
they aren't printing much, or a Kyocera if its a few thousand pages a
month. If their usage is on the heavy side they may do well to consider
a supplies and service cost per page contract from someone.

HP is still one of the best.Check what toner module it uses and see if there
are aftermarket refills available. Most likely there is at about half the
cost of an HP. That is all we've used in our HPs at work and they are
still perfect after 10 years for one, 6 for the other.

eBay is good for toners for older models, many are genuine HP,
boxed, sealed, and unused. Just someones overstock for a printer
they replaced. Sooner or later the one you want
appears. Even toners for the HPIID the old clamshell,
flatbed, built to last ones. One you've fixed the fuser Triac driver
problem.

Hi!

If you are willing to use aftermarket toner from third party suppliers, HP
is probably the way to go. Almost all major toner vendors will have toner
for an HP printer. The only drawback is that when you buy an HP printer, you
will pay some more for the HP name.

Samsung makes a good, high quality laser printer, and most of them have a
so-called "toner save" button you can press. Samsung says this can expand
the life of toner cartridges by 60%. I haven't seen that much of a gain in
toner cartridge life with the things I print, but the reduction in quality
isn't too severe.

Aftermarket toner is becoming available for the Samsung printer lineup. I
just put a refilled cartridge in my ML-1740 and it works fine. It cost about
$20 less than what Samsung asks for a new cartridge.

Also look around for any printers on clearance tables. I got what amounted
to a brand new HP LaserJet 1012 for $80 and they threw in a brand new HP
toner when I asked...

you are paying for the quality according to all tests in PCworld. they
tested with hp toner.

the reviews have not been consistent

Be sure to look up (or ask about) the monthly duty cycle of a Samsung. I
have the ML 1740, and bought a second one for a second computer. At the
time its same price class replacement was coming out (ML 2010). While it
had a couple of desirable features (replaceable roller, which can go bad)
the 1740 was rated to print more pages per month.

I've had almost no problems (sucks an extra page through once in a while)
but the 1740 prints graphics a tad light. I'm happy with it.

As for toner, sign up for Office Depot rewards program. They send you
coupons once a month or so, and usually there's a $10 off $75 or something
like that. That's when I buy a printer cart (includes the drum).
OfficeMax and Staples similar programs but Office Depot is more regular
with useful coupons.

Where did you get the cartridge?

Of course they did.
the reviews have not been consistent

My experiences have...
$20 is not much of a savings

It adds up.

That would be wrong. Every laser printer I've ever worked with has a page
counter. The LaserJet I got had less than 5 prints on it. That and case
condition can tell you everything.

Hi!
Where did you get the cartridge?

Corvox Partners, Inc. is one place that carries Samsung replacement
cartridges. I got their "replacement, like new" cartridge.

I can't tell the difference between the Samsung original and their
replacement.

Notwithstanding the page count you never know what kind of abuse the
printer had. Just look at the store demos that are not even plugged
in. They certainly are abused.

Sorry...Are you an HP apologiast? BUY HP! Buy HP original?

I really may have this wrong. But I need to hear it If I do, Mea
culpa.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I've fed back some ideas but the best
way to save money appears to be not to print in the first place. Silly as it
sounds, that could make a huge saving :) The number of pages of printout
that go straight in the bin next to our printers is surprising.

That and make sure you look around for the best deals.

Ohh, and only print in colour when you really have to.

Refurbished cartridges might save some money.

Cheers, Rob.
